Konsulat Jenderal Republik Indonesia (KJRI) in Hamburg, Germany, held Eid al-Fitr prayers for Indonesian Muslims in a closed hall. Following the prayers, attendees enjoyed a breakfast hosted by KJRI Hamburg.
Early Celebration and Method of Determination
Eid al-Fitr was celebrated on 30th March 2025, earlier than in Indonesia. The date was determined using the hisab method, based on astronomical calculations. This approach has been employed since 2008, in line with the practices of the Zentralrat der Muslime in Deutschland (ZMD), one of the largest Islamic organizations in Germany.
Early Decision-Making and Certainty
The decision to hold Eid prayers in Germany was made at the beginning of Ramadan, without waiting for the moon sighting as done in Indonesia. This method, sanctioned by the European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), provides certainty for Muslims in non-Muslim majority countries to prepare for Eid in advance.
Local scholars, including Imam Ustaz Ahmad Najib Atoillah, determined the Eid date. Despite the cold temperature in Hamburg (6 degrees Celsius), the Eid prayer was conducted indoors.
Multiple Sessions to Accommodate Attendees
KJRI Hamburg collaborated with various Indonesian Muslim groups to hold two Eid prayer sessions at 8:00 am and 9:00 am CEST, anticipating a large turnout. The previous year saw over 600 attendees, surpassing the venue’s capacity of about 250 people.
Joyous Celebrations
Indonesians from different cities within the jurisdiction of KJRI Hamburg, such as Ummi, who had been in Germany for only six months, and Wira from Nordhausen, who traveled four hours by train, joined in the Eid festivities.
In total, over 800 Indonesian citizens partook in the prayers, shared a meal, and fostered community ties at KJRI Hamburg during Eid al-Fitr.
